“The economy is so bad that these days I get too scared to even open some messages on my phone because everyone is begging” – Dele Momodu
Veteran journalist and publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu, recently expressed deep concern over the severity of economic hardship in Nigeria. During an interview with Rufai Oseni on Nevon Media, aired on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, Momodu stated that the current level of suffering is unprecedented in his experience.
He noted that the crisis has reached a point where he feels apprehensive about checking his phone messages, as he is inundated daily with requests for financial assistance from citizens struggling to survive. “These days, even for me to open some messages on my phone, I’m scared, because everyone is begging. The suffering of the people,” he remarked.
Reflecting on his perspective as a 66-year-old who has witnessed many of Nigeria’s historical challenges, Momodu insisted that “nothing can equal this” present situation. In addition to the economic crisis, he criticized the Federal Government’s handling of insecurity, describing it as the worst he has seen, and accused the administration of failing to show genuine remorse or a sense of atonement for the prevailing state of the nation.
