Egypt Demands FIFA Probe into Refereeing Following World Cup Exit
The Egyptian Football Federation has officially requested that FIFA remove French referee Francois Letexier and his officiating team from the World Cup, citing “blatant errors” and “double standards” during Egypt’s 3-2 loss to Argentina in the last-16. Federation President Hany Aburida filed a formal complaint on Wednesday, alleging that officiating decisions directly contributed to the Pharaohs’ elimination from the tournament.
The controversy centers on several high-stakes VAR interventions that favored the reigning world champions. Egypt’s frustration peaked after a Mostafa Ziko goal—which would have extended their lead to 2-0—was overturned following a VAR review that identified a foul earlier in the sequence. Later, Egypt alleged they were denied a clear penalty after Alexis Mac Allister appeared to pull Hamdy Fathy in the build-up to Enzo Fernandez’s decisive goal for Argentina.
Egypt’s head coach, Hossam Hassan, echoed the federation’s anger in his post-match comments, openly accusing officials of bias to ensure Argentina’s progression. “I do not want to put it nicely and talk about hard luck. We have been cheated unfairly today, we have suffered injustice,” Hassan stated. He further suggested that the officiating crew may have prioritized the presence of stars like Lionel Messi over adhering to fair play.
The Egyptian Football Federation’s statement explicitly called for an investigation into the entire officiating team, including the VAR operators, arguing that the refusal to review footage favorable to Egypt constituted a “crime of discrimination.” Aburida urged FIFA to take disciplinary action and exclude the crew from the remainder of the competition.
The match, which saw Egypt squander a lead before succumbing to a late comeback, has sparked a heated debate regarding the influence of officiating on tournament outcomes. FIFA has yet to issue a formal response to the federation’s demands, but the allegations represent a significant challenge to the tournament’s integrity, highlighting the ongoing tension surrounding VAR implementation in high-profile matches.
