“Sue me if I’m lying” – Femi Falana accuses former governor, Ali Modu Sheriff of funding Boko Haram

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has renewed allegations linking former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, to the early activities of the Boko Haram insurgency, challenging him to seek legal redress if the claims are untrue.

In a video circulating online, Falana alleged that Sheriff provided financial support to the group and entered into a political alliance with its members during the 2003 governorship election in Borno State.

“Not only did he sponsor that organisation by providing funds for them, in 2003 he had a deal with the Boko Haram sect to get him to win the election,” Falana claimed.

The senior lawyer further alleged that after assuming office, Sheriff appointed Buji Foi as Commissioner for Religious Affairs before he later left the administration.

Falana also referenced previous allegations by late Australian negotiator Reverend Stephen Davis, who had accused some prominent Nigerians of funding Boko Haram.

The former governor has repeatedly denied any connection to the insurgent group, and no court has found him guilty of involvement in Boko Haram activities.
