You’re rushing State Police Bill to mask security failures – ADC knocks Tinubu
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has sharply criticized the Tinubu administration for rushing the State Police Bill through the National Assembly. While the party supports state policing in principle, it argues that this move is a “panicky” and politically motivated attempt to appear proactive against Nigeria’s worsening insecurity rather than a genuine effort at constitutional reform.
The opposition party contends that the government is merely recycling existing ideas to create a facade of progress. According to National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the bill was pushed forward “without sufficient public consultation” and ignores the deep-rooted planning required to build an effective and accountable policing system.
Questioning the timing of the policy, the ADC highlighted that the administration waited until “almost the end of its tenure” to aggressively pursue this reform. The party warned that passing legislation alone is an insufficient remedy for the complex crises of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism currently plaguing the nation.
Instead, the ADC emphasized that successful reform requires long-term investment in critical areas such as recruitment, training, funding, and judicial oversight. The party concluded, “What we are witnessing is a hurried response to a worsening security crisis, not the careful institutional planning required to build a functional, accountable and effective policing system.”
