“State Police Is Not the Solution to Nigeria’s Insecurity” — Lawyer Maduabuchi Idam

Activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has argued that the creation of state police is not the answer to Nigeria’s growing security challenges.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Idam warned that placing police structures under the control of state governors could expose opposition figures, critics, and perceived political opponents to abuse.

According to him, the current political climate in Nigeria makes state policing vulnerable to misuse for political interests rather than public safety.

“State policing is neither the desired solution nor a sustainable answer to Nigeria’s security challenges,” he said.

Idam also expressed concerns that state police could undermine free, fair, and credible elections if governors exercise direct control over law enforcement agencies.

He urged President Bola Tinubu to carefully consider the implications of the proposal, insisting that not every policy idea should be implemented.

“State policing has the potential to create even greater security challenges than those Nigeria currently faces,” he added.
