Grammy 2026: I am disappointed in Chioma – Delta Gov’s aide

Ossai Ovie, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, has publicly criticized Nigerian attendees at the 68th Grammy Awards for their choice of attire. In a social media post shared on Monday, February 2, Ovie argued that the artists and their guests missed a vital opportunity to project Nigerian cultural identity on one of the world’s most influential stages.

The aide specifically singled out Chioma Adeleke, the wife of Afrobeat superstar Davido, labeling her red-carpet outfit as inappropriate and a departure from traditional values. “I am disappointed in Chioma Davido’s dressing. She shouldn’t have been half-naked to Grammy,” Ovie wrote, expressing his frustration with the trend of prioritizing Western fashion over local heritage.

Ovie further contended that as global ambassadors of Nigerian excellence, the attendees have a responsibility to remain grounded in their roots. “She didn’t represent Nigerian culture well, embracing a half naked revealing Western style instead. Cultural representation matters, and it’s crucial,” he added, emphasizing the power of fashion in international diplomacy.

The critique did not stop at Chioma; Ovie also held Davido accountable for the fashion choice, suggesting the music icon should have played a role in guiding his wife’s stylistic direction for the night. “I am disappointed in Davido for allowing her to dress this way. I am really disappointed,” he stated.

His comments come just 24 hours after the ceremony at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, where several Nigerian and African stars were in the spotlight. While the night celebrated significant musical milestones, Ovie’s remarks have sparked a fresh debate regarding the balance between personal expression and cultural advocacy for public figures.

Despite the controversy over the red carpet, the 2026 Grammys saw notable moments for African music, including South African singer Tyla winning Best African Music Performance. However, for Ovie, the visual representation was a missed mark that overshadowed the artistic achievements of the night.

The Delta State official concluded by urging Nigerian celebrities to rethink their global image, asserting that the world looks to them to showcase the richness of African traditions. As of Monday evening, neither Davido nor Chioma has responded to the aide’s public criticism.
