Mother Arrested for Child Abuse; Infant Placed in Protective Custody
Mrs. Chisom Chukwuyere and her husband, Chukwudi Chukwuyere, have been arrested alongside a teenage boy for the brutal assault of a 10-year-old minor in their care in Awada, Obosi. The case, which has ignited widespread public outrage, centers on the alleged cruelty inflicted upon the victim, leading to police intervention and a formal investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Following the arrests, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development intervened to secure the welfare of the suspects’ own children. In a distressing scene at the ministry, Mrs. Chukwuyere broke down in tears as her infant child, Chukwutulumugo Chukwuyere, was taken into protective custody.
The ministry confirmed that, in accordance with established child welfare protocols, the infant was handed over to a relative for his protection. “The Ministry has assured the public that it will continue to monitor the wellbeing of the child and his siblings to ensure they are well cared for in the coming days,” officials stated.
The child is now under the guardianship of Mrs. Rita Onuoha, the elder sister of Mr. Chukwudi Chukwuyere, who has pledged to take full responsibility for the siblings while the investigation proceeds. The incident has left many in the community questioning how the suspects could allegedly inflict such harm on one child while seemingly prioritizing the welfare of their own.
