Human Rights Activist Omoyele Sowore Reportedly Collapses During Abuja Democracy Day Protest

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore reportedly collapsed during a protest in Abuja on June 12, 2026. The incident occurred as protesters gathered at the Unity Fountain to demonstrate against insecurity, economic hardship, and poor governance.

According to reports, the situation escalated when security operatives fired tear gas canisters into the crowd to disperse the demonstrators. Witnesses stated that the resulting chaos and exposure to the gas caused breathing difficulties for several protesters, including Sowore, who subsequently collapsed at the scene.

He was reportedly rushed to an undisclosed medical facility for examination and treatment. As of this report, there has been no official statement from security authorities regarding the incident, and the activist’s exact medical condition remains unconfirmed.

The protest had been anticipated following a security alert issued by the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria, which had warned of potential confrontations and traffic diversions near key government facilities and the Central Business District for the June 12 event.
