“Democracy Means Little If Citizens Live in Fear” — Edo Governor Okpebholo

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has said that democracy cannot truly thrive when citizens are unable to live in peace and security.

In his Democracy Day message, the governor stressed that security, justice, and the protection of lives and property are among the most important dividends of democracy.

“Democracy means little to a family that cannot sleep peacefully at night or to a community living under the threat of criminal elements,” Okpebholo said.

The governor described insecurity as one of Nigeria’s biggest challenges, citing kidnapping, cult-related violence, armed robbery, and other crimes that continue to threaten communities across the country.

Reflecting on the significance of June 12, Okpebholo urged Nigerians to honour the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes by strengthening democratic institutions and promoting accountability, transparency, and the rule of law.

He also called on citizens and political leaders to reject divisive politics and misinformation, emphasizing that democracy survives through active participation, integrity, and respect for institutions.

The governor highlighted his administration’s efforts to tackle insecurity in Edo State through stronger collaboration with security agencies, intelligence gathering, and sustained action against criminal activities. He also pointed to ongoing investments in healthcare, education, infrastructure, youth empowerment, and economic development under the state’s SHINE Agenda.

Okpebholo expressed confidence that Nigeria can overcome its current challenges through unity, responsible leadership, and collective action.
