Wike Mocks Fubara Over Broken Agreement, Endorses Kingsley Chinda for 2027

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has publicly addressed the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, sharply criticizing Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his recent actions regarding the 2027 gubernatorial race. Speaking during an infrastructure inspection tour in Abuja on Monday, May 25, 2026, Wike revealed that a political pact brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had required Governor Fubara to abandon his second-term ambition in exchange for the cessation of impeachment proceedings by the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Wike expressed strong disapproval of the Governor’s initial decision to purchase APC nomination forms, labeling it a betrayal of trust and an affront to the President’s mediation efforts. “In the first place, he ought not to have collected the form because the agreement was reached that the impeachment should be dropped, while he should also not talk about a second tenure,” Wike stated. “By collecting the form first, he didn’t show signs of gentlemanship.”

Following Fubara’s eventual withdrawal from the primary, the APC declared Kingsley Chinda, the former House of Representatives Minority Leader, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election. Wike threw his full support behind Chinda, describing him as a “good product” with the necessary legislative and executive experience to lead the state. “Everybody knows that Kingsley Chinda is the material. He’s quite experienced… I’m sure that he must have been approached by the ruling All Progressives Congress to join them and then get the ticket,” the Minister added.

The Minister’s comments were made during a tour of several major capital projects intended to mark the third anniversary of President Tinubu’s administration. These include the Renewed Hope City in Kassara, the Airport Road to Kuje corridor, and the landmark City Gate project. Wike praised the quality of work delivered by contractors and credited First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu for the vision behind the City Gate development, which is expected to be handed over by early June.
