ADC Accuses President Tinubu of Leading Nigeria Toward “Abyss”

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has sharply criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing his administration of steering Nigeria toward a “dangerous precipice” and deepening the nation’s socio-economic crisis.

In a statement released on Monday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC cited record levels of food insecurity, failing businesses, and widespread insecurity as evidence of the administration’s governance failures. The party specifically referenced projections that approximately 34.7 million Nigerians could face severe food and nutrition insecurity during the 2026 lean season, alongside the displacement of over 2.3 million citizens due to violence.

“If the opposition is going to take the country backwards, it would be to reset it from the edge of the dangerous precipice that the current administration has placed it on, because to continue on the same trajectory is to plunge the country into the abyss,” the statement read.

The ADC dismissed the President’s recent criticism of the opposition as “ironic and tragic,” arguing that the current government has failed to provide empathy or accountability for the deteriorating living conditions of ordinary Nigerians. The party challenged the President to address the core issues facing the citizenry, specifically questioning why food prices remain unaffordable and why the security landscape continues to decline despite recurring promises of reform.

Furthermore, the ADC raised significant concerns regarding the integrity of the recent All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary. The party described as “unbelievable” the announcement that President Tinubu secured 10.99 million votes in a one-man contest.

“In a process designed for President Tinubu to contest against himself, one may be tempted to dismiss the figure as laughable if it were not recognisable for what it truly represents: a subtle attempt to set the stage and condition Nigerians for the kind of fantastic rigging being planned by the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections,” the statement added.

Concluding its address, the ADC stated that Nigeria is in urgent need of competent, compassionate leadership, insisting that the electorate is no longer moved by political grandstanding and is instead focused on the harsh realities of daily economic survival.
