US Suspends Immigrant Visa Processing for Nigeria, Egypt and 73 other Countries
The United States has announced a suspension of immigrant visa processing for applicants from 75 countries, marking a new move by President Donald Trump to tighten immigration controls.
A spokesperson for the US State Department said the pause will take effect from January 21 and will remain in place indefinitely while the government reviews its screening and vetting procedures. Consular officers have been instructed to refuse visa applications under existing laws during the review period.
The suspension affects countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania, including Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia, Brazil, Jamaica, and Haiti, among others.
US officials said the decision is aimed at strengthening national security and improving immigration vetting processes. The move is expected to impact thousands of prospective immigrants and has reignited debate over America’s immigration policies.
