Patience Ozokwor Defends “Villainous” Roles as a Mirror to Society

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, affectionately known as “Mama G,” has addressed the long-standing public tendency to conflate her iconic antagonistic on-screen characters with her actual personality. Speaking in a recent video chat, the 67-year-old star emphasized that her performances are a deliberate artistic choice aimed at exposing societal ills rather than reflecting her true self.

Ozokwor acknowledged that many viewers often struggle to separate the harsh, calculating, and villainous women she plays—often depicted as antagonistic in-laws or strict matriarchs—from her real-life demeanor. However, she maintained that her portrayal of these complex figures is a vital tool for social commentary. “I feel bold to expose the ills in society,” she stated. “Those things happen and nobody wants to expose them. I am exposing them.”

For decades, the “Mama G” persona has been a staple of Nigerian cinema, drawing both immense popularity and a reputation for “wickedness” that has followed the actress off-screen. Despite this, Ozokwor remains unfazed by the misconceptions, noting that she takes great pride in her craft. “I am not like that, but I expose it. I am extremely proud of myself, and Mama G lovers are proud of me,” she added.

Her comments arrive at a time when discussions about the influence of Nollywood on cultural perceptions are intensifying. By choosing to embody these challenging roles, Ozokwor asserts that she provides a necessary service: holding a mirror up to behavioral patterns that often go unchecked within families and communities.
