Borno Reintegrates 720 Ex-Boko Haram Fighters, Says Nearly 10,000 Have Completed Rehabilitation

The Borno State Government has reintegrated 720 former Boko Haram fighters into their communities after they completed a deradicalisation, rehabilitation, and reintegration programme. The latest beneficiaries, classified as low-risk participants, are part of Batch 9 of the state’s rehabilitation initiative.

According to state officials, the programme, launched in 2021 under Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, has now rehabilitated and reintegrated a total of 9,680 former insurgents. The initiative has also catered to 992 spouses and 2,050 children linked to ex-fighters.

Speaking at the reintegration ceremony in Maiduguri, the state government described the programme as a key part of its non-military strategy to promote peace and encourage insurgents to abandon violence and return to society. Officials said more than 350,000 people have voluntarily surrendered and exited insurgent camps since the programme began.

The reintegrated individuals were returned to communities across Borno State after undergoing screening, rehabilitation, and skills acquisition training aimed at helping them rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society
