Atiku Seeks Reconciliation with Amaechi After Primary Victory
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has held a meeting with his primary rival, Rotimi Amaechi, following his successful emergence as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election. The meeting, which took place in Abuja, is widely viewed as a strategic effort to foster unity within the party.
Atiku secured the ADC ticket after a decisive victory over Amaechi and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen. Despite the clear results, the process faced internal friction, with Amaechi publicly rejecting the outcome and alleging that the exercise was marred by irregularities.
In his victory speech, Atiku acknowledged the need for internal cohesion and reached out to his fellow contestants. He specifically appealed to Amaechi and other aggrieved party members to “close ranks and work together” to mount a strong challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming national polls.
Although neither man provided an official comment to the press following their meeting, political observers suggest the discussion focused on pacifying the former Rivers State governor. By securing Amaechi’s support, Atiku aims to resolve internal disputes and consolidate his position as the party’s standard-bearer.
The ADC leadership remains hopeful that these reconciliation efforts will mitigate the impact of the primary’s contentious atmosphere. The party intends to present a united front as it shifts its focus toward the 2027 general election.
This meeting underscores the high stakes of the 2027 contest as the party moves forward. With the primary concluded, the focus now shifts to whether the ADC can effectively bridge its internal divides before the general campaign officially begins.
