FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Projects Electoral Gains for APC via Infrastructure Push

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) will see a significant boost in electoral support in the capital territory by the 2027 general elections. Speaking on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, during an inspection tour of projects marking the administration’s second anniversary, Wike attributed this expected shift to the government’s aggressive focus on infrastructure, particularly in satellite towns and previously neglected rural communities.

Development as a Political Tool

Wike argued that the administration’s strategy of extending development beyond the city center is fundamentally altering the political landscape in the FCT. He cited the recent commissioning of the A2-Pai Road in Kwali—the first time a sitting president has visited the area to inaugurate a project—as a testament to the administration’s impact.

“What reason would people have not to vote for Mr. President now?” Wike asked, noting that the administration’s performance in recent Area Council elections already signals growing public support. He explicitly challenged the opposition to visit the territory and witness the ongoing transformations firsthand, stating, “It will be interesting for the public to see governance in action.”

Project Scope and Anniversary Milestones

The Minister confirmed that at least 20 major projects are slated for inauguration during the anniversary period, with that number likely to grow as additional works reach completion. Key infrastructure highlights from his inspection tour include:

Judicial Infrastructure: Wike inspected the Appeal Court Complex in Dakibiyu (70% complete) and the ongoing construction of dedicated residential quarters for judges serving in the Court of Appeal, FCT High Court, Federal High Court, Industrial Court, and the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Connectivity and Urban Works: Ongoing progress was noted on the Kuje-Gwagwalada and Gomani-Yangoji roads, as well as extensive work on collector roads, including street lighting, walkways, and bridge construction in Gaduwa and Kabusa.

Informal Sector Relocation: At the Apo informal sector site, intended for the relocation of the Apo Mechanic Village, Wike confirmed that road networks and lighting are finished, with immediate focus shifting to water supply, security infrastructure, and police housing.

A Broadened Development Agenda

Addressing criticisms that the administration has disproportionately prioritized judicial infrastructure, Wike emphasized that the FCT is pursuing an “inclusive development agenda.” He reiterated that current projects span multiple sectors, ranging from essential rural road networks that facilitate trade to urban revitalization projects aimed at improving the overall standard of living for FCT residents.
