Governor Okpebholo Vows Justice After Senseless Killing of UNIBEN Student

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has strongly condemned the murder of Alexander Omojiate, a part-time student of the University of Benin who was killed by suspected cultists on Sunday. In a statement released on May 11, 2026, by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, the Governor described the cold-blooded attack as an affront to human dignity and public safety. He extended his deepest condolences to the victim’s family, vowing that the perpetrators would face the full weight of the law.

The Governor emphasized that the Edo State Police Command has already launched a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure the case is not swept under the rug. He assured the public that security agencies are working tirelessly to identify and apprehend the gunmen. Okpebholo noted that his administration stands firmly against such violence, stating that the brazen killing on a day regarded as sacred is “completely unacceptable” and an attack on his government’s core values.

Okpebholo highlighted his administration’s ongoing efforts to dismantle cult networks through sustained security operations and inter-agency collaboration with the Nigerian Army and the DSS. He pointed to the successful arrest and prosecution of numerous suspects since he took office as evidence of this resolve. The Governor maintained that Edo State will never become a sanctuary for criminals, stressing that those who terrorize innocent citizens will eventually be found and prosecuted.

The administration’s strategy also involves community engagement with traditional and religious leaders to prevent young people from being recruited into cults. Okpebholo reaffirmed his commitment to rehabilitating vulnerable youths while maintaining a zero-tolerance policy for those who choose a life of crime. He stated, “Since assuming office, the administration has taken deliberate and sustained steps to confront the cult menace head-on,” highlighting a multi-faceted approach to security.

Addressing the state’s residents, the Governor urged anyone with useful information regarding the killing to step forward and assist the authorities. He promised that all shared information would be handled with the strictest confidentiality to protect informants. By encouraging this cooperation, he hopes to speed up the apprehension of the killers and provide the Omojiate family with the closure and justice they deserve following their tragic loss.

In his final remarks, Governor Okpebholo assured every community in Edo State that his government remains fully committed to their protection. He vowed to continue strengthening security architecture to ensure that no other family has to endure the pain caused by senseless cult violence. The Governor concluded by reiterating his stance: “Edo State will not be a sanctuary for criminals. Those who carry arms and terrorise innocent people will face the full consequences of the law.”
