Mother dies, daughter survives in Third Mainland Bridge crash
A tragic head-on collision between two Toyota Sienna vehicles occurred earlier today at the Ilaje axis of the Third Mainland Bridge, inward Iyana Oworo. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that excessive speeding led to the violent crash between the cars, registered as LSR 809 GV and LSR 695 HM.
The accident resulted in the immediate death of an adult woman, though her 30-year-old daughter miraculously survived the impact. LASTMA operatives and officers from the Oworonsoki Police Division arrived quickly to secure the scene, evacuate the deceased, and manage the resulting traffic gridlock to protect other motorists.
While one driver involved in the crash fled the scene to evade responsibility, the second driver was successfully apprehended by authorities. The agency stated, “In the aftermath of the crash, one of the drivers absconded from the scene. However, the second driver was promptly apprehended by LASTMA personnel and subsequently handed over to the police to facilitate thorough investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with the law.”
General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reacted to the tragedy by issuing a stern warning to Lagos motorists regarding the dangers of reckless driving. He emphasized that over-speeding continues to be a primary factor in fatal road incidents across the state’s major highways.
The General Manager urged all drivers to exercise better discipline and strictly adhere to posted speed limits to prevent further loss of life. LASTMA remains dedicated to its mission of maintaining smooth traffic flow and ensuring the safety of all road users within the Lagos metropolis.
Investigations into the crash are ongoing as police work to track down the driver who absconded. The tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the high stakes involved in road safety, as the agency reiterated its commitment to protecting lives through constant patrol and enforcement
