Michael Carrick Returns to Old Trafford as Interim Manager

Manchester United have reached a verbal agreement with Michael Carrick to serve as interim head coach until the end of the season. The former club captain returns to lead the side following the recent dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

Carrick takes over the dugout from Darren Fletcher, who briefly stepped up from his role as Under-18s boss. Fletcher’s short tenure included a 2-2 draw against Burnley and an FA Cup exit at the hands of Brighton.

The 44-year-old is no stranger to the pressure of the United hot seat. The five-time Premier League winner previously oversaw three matches as caretaker manager in 2021 after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure.

To bolster the coaching staff, former Chelsea and England assistant manager Steve Holland will join Carrick at Old Trafford. His experience is expected to provide vital support during this transitional period.

The decision follows a targeted interview process conducted by the club over the last week. United officials held face-to-face talks with Carrick on Thursday and club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Saturday.

Carrick now faces an immediate test of his leadership as he prepares for the upcoming fixture schedule. He is expected to lead the team from the touchline for the Manchester derby this Saturday lunchtime.

The move marks a return to familiarity for the Red Devils as they look to stabilize their season. Carrick’s permanent appointment through the summer provides the club with much-needed clarity for the months ahead.
