“Tinubu’s Government Is Making Progress, Obi’s Call for Resignation Is Childish” — Presidency

The Presidency has dismissed calls by former presidential candidate Peter Obi for President Bola Tinubu to resign, describing the demand as baseless, undemocratic, and a distraction from governance.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said Obi’s comparison between Nigeria and the resignation of a British Prime Minister was misplaced, noting that Nigeria operates a presidential system with fixed terms.

According to the statement, President Tinubu remains popular among Nigerians, citing recent electoral victories recorded by the APC in various states and constituencies as evidence of public support.

The Presidency also accused Obi of presenting a distorted picture of the country’s situation, insisting that the Tinubu administration inherited deep economic and security challenges but has recorded measurable progress since 2023.

On security, the government said thousands of terrorists have been neutralised, several kidnapped victims rescued, and investments in modern security technology expanded across the country.

The statement also highlighted improvements in economic indicators, including increased government revenue, higher foreign reserves, growth in oil production, and gains in the stock market.

According to the Presidency, Tinubu’s reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy, the Electricity Act, student loan initiatives, and ongoing infrastructure projects, are laying the foundation for long-term economic growth.

The government further argued that global economic factors, including tensions in the Middle East, have contributed to the rising cost of living, stressing that the challenge is not unique to Nigeria.

Describing Obi’s remarks as “childish and hollow,” the Presidency maintained that President Tinubu remains focused on governance, economic reforms, security improvements, and delivering on his administration’s agenda.

The statement concluded by accusing Obi of living in a “self-constructed echo chamber” and insisted that Nigeria is making progress under the current administration despite existing challenges.
