“It Was Security Protocol, Not Fear” — Plateau State Governor, Mutfwang Defends Armoured Vehicle Use After Palm Sunday Attack
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has defended his use of an armoured vehicle during a visit to Angwan Rukuba following a deadly attack, saying his actions were misrepresented online.
Speaking in a television interview, Mutfwang explained that security operatives advised the measure due to the volatile situation, stressing that it was for protection, not fear.
“The security personnel have a duty to protect me… if they assess the situation as hostile, they must act,” he said.
He added that tensions were high, with residents insisting on seeing him before allowing the evacuation of victims’ bodies, which prompted his immediate return from Abuja.
Mutfwang also clarified that standing through the vehicle’s roof was to better address the crowd, not a sign of panic.
He criticised social media narratives, saying they focused on a small part of his visit while ignoring his engagement with residents, including efforts to calm tensions.
Despite the circumstances, the governor maintained that he felt safe among the people during the visit.
