NANS Challenges Calls for Minister Umahi’s Removal Over Habila Case
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has publicly opposed the Northern Youth Council’s demand for the removal of Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, following the death of Miss Mary Habila. NANS National President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, insisted that the public should await the results of an autopsy to “establish the facts surrounding the incident” rather than rushing to judgment.
NANS argued that the tragedy should not be used as a tool for “personal interests, political motives or sentiments.” The association noted that Minister Umahi has consistently supported a transparent investigation, having reportedly requested a post-mortem examination himself. Consequently, NANS questioned the motive behind the Northern Youth Council’s demand, suggesting that anyone seeking true justice would wait for the investigation to conclude.
Defending the minister’s record, the association praised the quality of infrastructure projects currently being executed under his leadership. NANS maintained that Umahi should be permitted to continue his official duties for the Tinubu administration while relevant authorities complete their inquiry into the circumstances of Miss Habila’s passing.
In its final stance, the association condemned the agitation for the minister’s removal, characterizing the Northern Youth Council’s actions as “misplaced.” NANS urged the group to approach the situation with greater objectivity and to refrain from what it described as “attacks on a public officer” before any wrongdoing has been proven.
