Abia state ready for state police – Governor Otti

A State Governor Alex Otti has expressed readiness to establish a state police system, revealing that preparations are already underway.

Speaking during a media interaction, Otti said the state’s Homeland Security team is working out the framework, adding, “We are getting ready to launch it once the whistle is blown.”

The move follows recent approval by the Presidency allowing states to set up their own policing structures.

Supporting the initiative, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Azubuko Uda, said Abia is well-positioned to lead, noting that decentralised policing would improve security coordination, funding, and efficiency.

He added that a state police system would better secure key commercial centres like Aba and boost investor confidence, while also addressing declining interest among youths in federal security agencies.

Uda, however, advised that the process must be carefully planned with input from experienced stakeholders to ensure effective implementation.
