Five Dead, Ten Injured in Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway Crash

A tragic lone crash occurred on the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and leaving ten others with various degrees of injuries. The accident, which took place near Iyana Egbado around 11:12 am, involved a white Mazda E2000 bus.

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) spokesperson in Ogun State, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, confirmed that the bus was carrying a total of 20 passengers at the time of the incident. He stated, “The lone crash involved one white Mazda E2000 bus with registration number KRD809XC. A total of twenty persons were involved in the crash, comprising six adult males, eleven adult females, one male child, and two female children.”

The impact of the crash was severe, leading to a fire that claimed five lives, including one adult male, two adult females, one male child, and one female child. While ten passengers were rushed to the General Hospital in Ifo and Oreofe Specialist Hospital in Itori for medical treatment, five others fortunately escaped the wreckage without sustaining injuries.

Authorities have identified excessive speed and overloading as the primary factors that led to the devastating accident. The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital in Ifo as the community reels from the loss.

Ogun State FRSC Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, has extended his condolences to the affected families. He issued a stern warning to motorists regarding the dangers of reckless driving, urging them to strictly adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life on the roads.

Following this incident, the FRSC is reinforcing its appeal for drivers to avoid speeding, overloading, and other traffic violations. Officials emphasized the critical need for compliance with safety standards, especially as motorists navigate busy highways during the current period.
