“If you’re renting in Lagos, don’t fix anything” — Actress Bolaji Ogunmola sparks debate over landlords in Lagos
Actress Bolaji Ogunmola has sparked a heated debate online after offering blunt advice to Lagos residents regarding the maintenance of their rented apartments.
She warned tenants to stop spending large sums of money on major repairs and renovations, noting that such efforts are rarely rewarded by property owners.
According to Ogunmola, many landlords respond to these improvements by either hiking the rent or threatening the tenants with eviction notices.
She highlighted heartbreaking stories of people who fixed their homes beyond the original value of the rent, only to face “wickedness of the highest level” from their landlords.
Supporting her stance, an X user shared that they have stayed in their current home for six years with only one rent increase because they strictly avoided doing major repairs.
The user explained that they chose to only use paint and wallpaper, ensuring they did not invest significantly in the landlord’s permanent structure.
Another social media user shared a cautionary tale of a friend who was forced to move out last year after a rent hike they could not afford, despite having invested heavily in the flat.
