“A Sitting President Should Have the Courage to Confront Questions About His Past” – Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has questioned President Bola Tinubu’s reported legal move to prevent the release of records concerning his past in a foreign court.

In a statement shared on Monday, August 31, 2026, Obi said Nigerians deserve transparency on matters of legitimate public interest, particularly issues relating to the President’s educational records.

He said:

“It is profoundly embarrassing that we have reached a point where a sitting President is asking a foreign court to withhold records concerning his past, particularly records relating to matters of legitimate public interest.”

Obi argued that a sitting president should be willing to confront questions about his past rather than prevent them from being subjected to legitimate scrutiny.
