Gospel singer Asu Ekiye announces separation from wife of 28 years

Multi-award-winning gospel artist Asu Ekiye has announced his separation from his wife, Kunemofa, after twenty-eight years of marriage.

Ekiye, known as the “Prince of the Niger Delta”, announced in a Facebook post on Thursday.

The gospel singer, who married Kunemofa in 1998, revealed that the marriage ended in 2025 but did not disclose the reasons for the breakdown. They had four children.

He wrote: “After 28 years of a deeply personal journey of growth, experience and reflection, I wish to announce, with a profound sense of sobriety and quiet resignation, that my marriage to Kunemofa Asu has come to an end. Some chapters, however significant and memorable, eventually come to an end.

The singer also disclosed that he proposed to her on the street, adding that she almost exploded with excitement when he did. Ekiye added that Kunemofa took two weeks to say yes after he proposed.

He described his now ex-wife as special, saying she met every criterion he had ever longed for in a wife, beautiful, spiritual, highly focused, intelligent, motherly, enterprising, resourceful, and above all, a true companion.

Ekiye rose to prominence with his 2001 release “Woekilemo” and went on to build a catalogue that includes “Eniye”, “Dey by My Side”, “Seiyo”, “Miyebibo”, “Kareyo” featuring Eben, “Ebikamo”, and “Yemiyemo”, among others.
