Government Replaces NYSC Khaki with Adire Fabric

In a significant update to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) overhaul, the Federal Government has confirmed that the iconic khaki uniform will be replaced with locally produced Adire fabric. Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, announced this change on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief. He explained that the initiative is intended to stimulate Nigeria’s textile industry and ensure that public spending directly bolsters the local economy.

The uniform change is part of the broader, 53-year-first reform package recently approved by the Federal Executive Council. Beyond aesthetics, the government is fundamentally restructuring the scheme’s operational framework. Minister Olawande highlighted that corps members will now be deployed based on their specific fields of study and professional backgrounds, ensuring that their service contributions align with their career trajectories.

The Minister also addressed concerns regarding the scheme’s leadership and security, clarifying that while the NYSC will transition to civilian operational leadership, the military remains an integral part of the program to ensure the safety of corps members. Furthermore, the government is exploring more practical deployment strategies, including posting corps members to regions where they have existing knowledge or residency to mitigate security risks in volatile areas.

These developments build upon the earlier announced reforms, which include extending the orientation program to six weeks, replacing the traditional Passing-Out Parade with a formal graduation ceremony, and implementing a technology-driven call-up process. By prioritizing local manufacturing through the adoption of Adire and refining the deployment process, the administration aims to transition the NYSC from a traditional mobilization model into a specialized, skills-oriented platform for national development.
