You’re unworthy of your office — APC blasts Makinde over ‘Operation Wetie’ remark

The All Progressives Congress has officially condemned Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, labeling him unworthy of his office following controversial remarks at an opposition summit. Addressing party leaders in Ibadan on Saturday, Makinde warned against the emergence of a one-party state. During his speech, he referenced the violent “Operation Wetie” era of the 1960s as a cautionary tale for those currently holding power.

The historical reference points to a period of extreme political unrest in Nigeria’s western region where homes and vehicles were doused with petrol and set ablaze. Makinde told the attendees: “For those that are carrying on as if there’s no tomorrow. They should remember that ‘Operation Wetie’ started from here. This is the same Wild Wild West.”

The APC issued a swift rebuttal through its national publicity secretary, Felix Morka, describing the comments as a reckless incitement to lawlessness. The party argued that such language from a chief security officer could potentially trigger “murdered rage” and anarchy across the nation. In a strongly worded statement, the party claimed Makinde’s rhetoric has effectively disqualified him from the high standards expected of a governor.

The ruling party also reminded the Governor that his position does not place him above the law regarding national stability. The statement noted: “Makinde must be reminded that constitutional immunity from prosecution is not immunity from accountability for threats or acts against national security.” The APC subsequently called on intelligence agencies to monitor the situation closely to prevent any breach of public peace.

Addressing the broader political climate, the APC dismissed the Governor’s fears of a one-party system, blaming the opposition’s struggles on internal failures. The party specifically criticized figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi for failing to maintain stability within their own organizations. The APC maintained that the democratic space remains open and competitive despite the opposition’s self-inflicted crises.

The party concluded by reaffirming its commitment to President Bola Tinubu’s agenda and its confidence in the 2027 general elections. It emphasized that no individual should be allowed to endanger Nigerian lives under the guise of political commentary. As of Sunday evening, the Oyo State government has not issued a formal clarification regarding the Governor’s specific intent behind the historical comparison.
