Nigeria’s economy worse under Tinubu than Obasanjo, Jonathan — Olawepo-Hashim
PDP presidential hopeful Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has launched a scathing critique of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic management, claiming Nigeria is now significantly weaker than under previous administrations.
During an interview on Channels Television, he highlighted a stark decline in national productivity, noting that the economy has shrunk despite the country’s vast human and natural wealth.
“GDP under Obasanjo was about $267 billion. Under Jonathan, it rose to over $574 billion in nominal terms. Today, under Tinubu, it has fallen to around $230 billion. This is a shocking regression,” he said.
Olawepo-Hashim argued that the naira’s collapse is disconnected from economic fundamentals, especially since oil production has nearly doubled and local refining has reduced the need for fuel imports.
The aspirant took a direct shot at the administration’s top officials, stating, “It is an open challenge, let their best hands, the CBN governor and the finance minister, come out for a live public debate on the economy with me.”
He also dismissed Tinubu’s celebrated legacy in Lagos, arguing that military-era infrastructure like the Third Mainland Bridge far outshines the current president’s contributions, such as the “smaller tolled bridge in Lekki.”
Finally, he brushed off the ADC as a viable alternative, alleging many of its members were part of the previous administration’s failures, saying, “many others in the ADC are mostly Buharists who are accused of being part of the current problem.”
