APC Accuses Makinde of Squandering N2.9 Billion on Oyo at 50 Anniversary
The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has sparked controversy by accusing Governor Seyi Makinde of squandering N2.9 billion on the state’s recent 50th-anniversary celebrations.
In a statement signed by Publicity Secretary Wasiu Olawale Sadare, the opposition party alleged that the governor heavily taxed local governments to fund the festivities.
The APC specifically claimed that N90 million was deducted from the federal allocation of each of the 33 local government councils to finance the anniversary.
Questioning the transparency of the spending, the party stated, “We have it on good authority that a sum of N90 million was deducted from the federal allocation of each of the 33 local government councils by Gov. Makinde ostensibly to fund the anniversary project.”
The party further alleged that additional undisclosed funds were pulled from the state coffers, bringing the suspected total cost of the event to over N3 billion.
In a scathing critique of the event’s value, the APC asked, “Was it the huge amount the cost of the misplaced air show, lopsided award conferment, colour-riot Ankara uniform for PDP members and one-man show novelty soccer match that justified the amount?”
While the Makinde administration has celebrated the milestone as a success, the APC maintains that the expenditure represents a significant waste of public resources.
