Former Real Madrid striker, Karim Benzema joins Al-Hilal

Former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has completed a surprise deadline-day free transfer from Al Ittihad to Al Hilal, sending shockwaves across the Saudi Pro League.

The 38-year-old, who joined Al Ittihad in 2023 and led them to a league and cup double in 2025, was in the final six months of his contract and reportedly unhappy with renewal terms. Al Hilal confirmed he has signed a one-and-a-half-year deal.

Reacting to the move, Benzema said he was proud of his time at Al Ittihad and grateful for the journey.

The transfer is said to have angered Cristiano Ronaldo, who reportedly sat out Al Nassr’s recent league match amid frustration over what he sees as unequal support among Public Investment Fund–owned clubs.

Reports in Portugal claim Ronaldo believes rivals like Al Hilal and Al Ittihad have received stronger backing, while Al Nassr manager Jorge Jesus admitted the club faces financial limitations in the transfer market.

The move further reshapes the balance of power in Saudi football as top stars continue to shift between rival clubs.
