Abba Yusuf Quits NNPP Over Crisis, Says Decision Is “In the Best Interest of Kano”

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), blaming prolonged internal disputes and court battles that he said have weakened the party nationwide.

In a resignation letter dated January 25, 2026, Yusuf wrote: “I write with a deep sense of gratitude… to resign my membership of the party.” He thanked the NNPP for giving him a platform since 2022 but said the party is now trapped in leadership crises and legal conflicts.

“The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions… increasingly irreconcilable,” he added, stressing that his decision was “in the best interest of the people of Kano State.”

His exit was followed by the resignation of 21 state lawmakers, eight House of Reps members, and all 44 local government chairmen in Kano.
