“Nigeria has moved from padded budgets to forged laws” — Peter Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has accused the Federal Government of presiding over what he described as the forging of laws, warning that the practice poses a serious danger to constitutional governance and public trust.

In a statement titled “Migrating from Padded Budgets to Forged Laws,” shared on his X handle on Saturday, Obi alleged that there are documented discrepancies between laws passed by the National Assembly and those eventually published and enforced by the executive arm of government.

According to Obi, the issue goes far beyond administrative mistakes and represents a grave constitutional breach that exposes deep institutional decay. He claimed Nigeria has moved from an era of padded budgets to one where laws are allegedly altered, with far-reaching consequences for taxpayers’ rights and access to justice.

The former Anambra State governor also criticised the Presidency for what he described as troubling silence, despite allegations involving possible forgery, abuse of process and institutional sabotage.

Obi raised concern over provisions he said were never approved by lawmakers, including new enforcement powers such as mandatory deposits before appeals, asset sales without judicial oversight, and arrest powers for tax authorities.

He called for full transparency, insisting Nigerians deserve to know what was passed by lawmakers, what was signed into law, and what is currently being enforced. Obi warned that trust in governance cannot survive if laws are altered without accountability, stressing that no nation can thrive where due process is ignored and silence replaces leadership.
