No more approvals for illegally created islands, let’s work together – President Tinubu tells Governors

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has cautioned Lagos State and other subnational governments against approving unauthorized island developments and construction projects that encroach on road setbacks and maritime zones.

Speaking on Thursday at the commissioning of the Lekki Deep Sea Port Access Road, Tinubu celebrated the successful completion of the project—one he initiated as Lagos State governor. He described it as a legacy infrastructure that will enhance logistics efficiency, lower costs for port users, and drive economic growth.

However, the president criticized the growing trend of illegal island creation and unregulated land reclamation, warning that such practices threaten national development and disrupt long-term infrastructure planning. He emphasized the importance of aligning infrastructure projects with national priorities and declared that unauthorized urban expansion would no longer be accepted.

Tinubu also lauded the progress of the Lekki Port, calling it a “huge success” and a clear example of what public-private partnerships can achieve. He went on to commend Aliko Dangote’s significant investments in the area, particularly the Dangote Refinery, which he described as “a great phenomenon” and a powerful expression of confidence in Nigeria’s future.

“I have directed the Honorable Minister of Works, the Surveyor-General of the Federation, and all state governors—this legacy project must be protected,” Tinubu said. “We must secure stable setbacks for future expansion and infrastructure development to strengthen our road network.”

“Please, our dear governors, let’s work together. Don’t grant planning approvals without involving the Surveyor-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Works,” he urged. “I’m glad the Deputy Governor of Lagos State is here and taking note—we will revoke all approvals already issued on setbacks. No more approvals for illegally created islands.”
