Mauritania’s Sidi Ould Tah elected as New AfDB President

Mauritania’s Sidi Ould Tah has been elected as the ninth President of the African Development Bank (AfDB). He will assume office on September 1, 2025, succeeding Nigeria’s Dr. Akinwumi Adesina after his 10-year tenure.

Tah emerged winner after rounds of voting at the AfDB Annual Meetings in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, defeating contenders from Senegal, Zambia, Chad, and South Africa. A former Minister of Economic Affairs in Mauritania and head of BADEA, Tah is known for expanding BADEA’s balance sheet and securing a AAA rating.

His leadership will focus on private sector partnerships, infrastructure development, and climate change response—key areas as Africa faces economic and environmental challenges.
