Tinubu approves relocation of 29 correctional centres
President Bola Tinubu has approved the relocation of 29 correctional centres from urban areas across Nigeria due to security concerns.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced on Friday that 29 correctional centres across the country will be relocated. Speaking at the unveiling of new operational vehicles for the Nigerian Correctional Service, he explained that rapid urban development has encroached on many of these facilities, compromising the required buffer zones and posing security risks.
Among the affected centres are those in Ikoyi, Apapa, Agodi, Enugu, and Suleja. The minister emphasized the urgency of the relocation, citing the Ikoyi Correctional Centre— which shares a fence with a polo club—as an example of how these facilities have become unsuitable for their current locations.
This initiative is part of a broader reform aimed at enhancing the correctional system and ensuring better security for both inmates and the public.
