Paralympics: Onyinyechi Mark Wins Nigeria’s First Gold Medal, Sets World Record
Nigeria’s Onyinyechi Mark has broken the Paralympic record in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category, lifting an impressive 145kg and surpassing the previous record held by fellow Nigerian Lucy Ejike. With one lift remaining, Mark is set to secure Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Her closest rival is attempting 138kg, while Mark aims to extend her record with a final lift of 147kg. Nigeria has a strong Paralympic tradition, particularly in powerlifting, consistently excelling at past Games, including a ten-medal haul at Tokyo 2020.
