BREAKING: Speaker withdraws controversial Counter Subversion Bill to penalize Nigerians who refuse to recite the National Anthem

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has withdrawn the controversial Counter Subversion Bill following widespread outrage.

Tajudeen announced the withdrawal on Wednesday through a statement released by his spokesperson, Musa Krishi.

The bill, which had been criticized for its harsh penalties for those who refuse to sing the national anthem, had previously been defended by Tajudeen as aligning with global practices. However, just hours later, the Speaker’s office issued a new statement retracting the bill.

“The Speaker acknowledges the significance of the concerns raised and the attention the Bill has garnered, reaffirming that he will never support any action that might disrupt the peace and unity of our nation,” parts of the statement announcing the withdrawal of the bill read.
