WTO to appoint Okonjo-Iweala as Director-General Next Week
The World Trade Organization is set to appoint Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its first female and first African leader. The appointment is said to hold next week. The global trade body announced on Tuesday that it would hold a special meeting of its General Council on February 15 “to consider the appointment of the next WTO director-general”. This comes after US President Joe Biden’s administration pledged “strong support” to Okonjo-Iweala, as against his predecessor Donald Trump, who had blocked her nomination for months. A Kenyan man has been sentenced to 30 years in jail for attempted murder after he chopped off his wife’s hands.
