Staff of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, were elated after receiving their long-overdue salary arrears. Earlier in June, the Abia State government announced plans to settle the N16.5 billion owed to staff of state-owned higher institutions in installments, a debt inherited from the previous administration. Commissioner for Finance, Mike Akpara, assured that the government would also pay off salary arrears for some civil service workers in phases, while ensuring other sectors of the economy are not affected.
