‘I didn’t eat or bathe for days’ – Peller on spending time in police detention
Popular Nigerian TikToker Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, has shared his experience following his release from police detention, where he spent nearly four days.
Peller was arrested along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road alongside his friend, Bello Oladipo, following allegations of driving a vehicle with tinted glass and no number plate. The pair were subsequently arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court on Monday on a three-count charge, which included resisting arrest, obstructing police officers from performing their lawful duties, and threatening and filming officers during their operation. The court granted Peller bail in the amount of ₦500,000.
In a series of posts on his Snapchat account after regaining his freedom on Tuesday, Peller recounted the harsh conditions he faced while in custody:
• Detention Conditions: Peller alleged that he neither ate nor bathed during his entire four-day stay in the cell.
• Cell Experience: He shared that upon entering the cell, other inmates greeted him by calling him their “001,” a moment he described as so absurd that it made him burst into laughter despite the gravity of his situation.
• Current Status: He mentioned that he had not yet resumed his social media streaming activities because he felt he didn’t look presentable after the ordeal, famously stating, “I am ugly now; I can’t show my face yet”.
