President Tinubu Commends Wike for Ending Abandoned Road Projects in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has officially lauded the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for successfully ending the long-standing era of abandoned road projects within Abuja. This commendation was delivered by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on behalf of the President during the inauguration of the newly completed Akinwumi Ajibola Street in the Gaduwa District. The project, which covers several local streets, was highlighted as a testament to the current administration’s shift in infrastructure delivery.

The President praised Wike for his decisive action, noting that the minister bypassed bureaucratic stagnation by returning contractors to sites, setting firm timelines, and securing necessary funding. “Minister Wike, let me put it on record. You have changed the delivery culture in the FCT. You ended the era of mobilisation without movement. You ended the era of abandoned inner roads while major highways took all the attention,” the President stated.

Highlighting the benefits to local residents, the President emphasized that the new infrastructure would significantly improve mobility, raise property values, and reduce vehicle wear and tear. He urged the community to take ownership of the new assets by protecting streetlights and ensuring that drainage systems remain free of refuse, framing the maintenance of these roads as a vital partnership between the government and the people.

During the event, Minister Wike issued a stern warning to the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu, regarding the unauthorized renaming of federal projects. While acknowledging that street naming is a local government function, Wike asserted that roads constructed with federal funds require federal approval for naming. “Do not use our projects to collect revenue. Use your own money to construct roads and then name those streets after whomever you wish,” the minister declared.

The commissioning of the Gaduwa road represents the 16th day of a month-long series of project inaugurations marking the administration’s third anniversary. Minister Wike noted that these efforts are part of a larger directive from President Tinubu to extend development beyond the city center into satellite towns and neglected districts. Projects in areas such as Kwali, Jahi-Gwarinpa, and Guzape were cited as evidence of this ongoing infrastructure drive.

Reflecting on the milestone, FCT Minister of State Mariya Mahmoud reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to the “Renewed Hope Agenda.” She emphasized that the completion of these local road networks is a critical step in the ongoing transformation of the capital city and underscores a sustained commitment to improving the quality of life for all FCT residents.
