Six terrorists die in own bomb explosion in Borno

Six suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have died after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) they were assembling exploded prematurely.

The incident occurred around 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026, in the Jubilaram area of Marte Local Government Area in Borno State.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama shared details of the incident on X, noting that the blast killed a suspected bomb expert named Abu Umar and five other fighters.

The explosion also left three other insurgents with severe injuries, dealing a blow to the ISWAP bomb-making cell operating within the Lake Chad region.

Regarding the incident, Makama wrote, “The explosion reportedly occurred while the device was being assembled, leading to a sudden detonation that destroyed their location and killed those inside,” emphasizing the destruction at the scene.

Intelligence reports suggest the blast heavily impacted an insurgent manufacturing site, which is expected to weaken the group’s capacity to execute roadside bomb attacks in the area.
