“No Regrets” – Abubakar Malami Vows to Fight Money Laundering Charges
Former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami has declared that he remains proud of his eight-year tenure and will vigorously defend his name against ongoing criminal charges. In a recent Hausa-language interview with DCL Hausa, Malami described his recent detentions by the EFCC and DSS as “God’s will,” while insisting he has no regrets regarding his official actions as Minister of Justice.
Malami, alongside his wife, Bashir Asabe, and son, Abdulaziz, is currently facing a 16-count money laundering charge involving approximately ₦8.7 billion. The family has pleaded not guilty to the allegations, which claim they used a complex web of corporate entities to disguise proceeds from unlawful activities. Malami recently regained his freedom after fulfilling bail conditions following a separate arraignment for alleged terrorism financing and illegal firearms possession.
The former AGF accused security agencies of “violating his constitutional rights” by conducting searches of his private residences and business premises without his consent or presence. He argued that, legally, he should have been allowed to oversee such investigations to ensure transparency. “Constitutionally, I have the right to be present during a search to oversee the investigation of my property and to know exactly what is being looked for or taken,” Malami stated.
During the interview, Malami reflected on his time spent in EFCC custody, Kuje Prison, and the DSS headquarters, maintaining a resolute stance despite the legal pressure. He expressed gratitude to supporters who resisted what he termed “media trials” and “sensational narratives,” adding that the struggle for what he calls “national redemption” is only just beginning.
The legal battle continues to draw significant public attention, particularly following a solidarity visit to Malami’s residence by former presidential candidate Peter Obi shortly after the ex-AGF’s release. Prosecution witnesses have already begun testifying, detailing bank transactions and property acquisitions linked to Malami’s family members as the trial moves forward in the Federal High Court.
Malami concluded his remarks by reaffirming his confidence in the justice system, though he warned that he would not be intimidated by the ongoing proceedings. As he prepares for his next court appearance, he maintains that every decision made during his time in office was intended for the betterment of the nation.
