Ogun State Police Command Arrests TikToker Mirabel Over Alleged False Rape Claim

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of TikToker Mirabel following allegations that she raised a false alarm regarding a sexual assault. The spokesperson for the command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed on Friday that the social media personality is currently in custody as investigations into her claims continue.

“She is with us now and investigation is ongoing,” Babaseyi stated. While the command has not confirmed if she will face prosecution for fabrication, the spokesperson noted that the next steps depend entirely on the final findings, adding, “The facts will tell at the conclusion of our investigation.”

This arrest marks a sharp turn in a case that initially saw Mirabel treated as a complainant. She had previously posted emotional videos alleging that an unidentified man invaded her home on February 15, assaulted her, and claimed his family’s influence would shield him from any legal consequences.

The viral videos sparked nationwide outrage, leading the Commissioner of Police to order an immediate investigation. Mirabel initially reported to the Ibafo Division and was later transferred to the Ogijo Police Station, where she provided statements and underwent a medical examination while receiving care for her emotional state.

Despite the initial public support for the survivor, the police have maintained a neutral stance throughout the process. Babaseyi had previously warned that while the command is committed to catching actual perpetrators, Nigerian law also criminalizes the act of providing false information to law enforcement.

“In general, if she’s telling the truth, the perpetrator will be arrested and charged to court appropriately,” Babaseyi explained. However, he cautioned that “If it is otherwise, the law goes against giving false information, and that can make anyone who gives false information culpable.”

The investigation is expected to clarify the inconsistencies that led to her detention. For now, the social media personality remains with the authorities as they determine whether the incident was a genuine assault or a coordinated attempt to mislead the public and the police.
