Protesters Storm National Assembly for Second Day Over Election Bill
Protesters returned to the National Assembly Complex in Abuja this Tuesday for a second consecutive day. Their primary demand is the mandatory real-time transmission of election results from polling units directly to the IREV portal.
The crowd gathered at the main entrance, creating a vocal presence to capture the attention of lawmakers. Demonstrators were heard chanting, “We no go gree, we no go gree, Akpabio, pass the bill,” as they pressed for immediate legislative action.
Security was tight as the group continued to emphasize the importance of electoral transparency. Many in the crowd were heard chanting “Our vote must count” to signal their refusal to accept manual collation processes.
The protesters displayed various placards to communicate their message to the Senate leadership. Some of the messages included “Don’t alter the bill, pass it,” and “Rigging election is a coup,” alongside several other inscriptions.
The chants specifically targeted Senate President Godswill Akpabio throughout the morning. The demonstrators are urging the leadership of the National Assembly to prioritize the passage of this specific bill without further delay.
This second day of demonstrations highlights an intensifying public interest in the country’s electronic voting infrastructure. The protesters have vowed to keep up the pressure until their demands for digital result sharing are formally met.
The National Assembly has yet to issue an official response to the group’s demands or the chants directed at its leadership. For now, the gates remain a focal point for those seeking to protect the integrity of future elections.
