Nigerians react as Wizkid tells Seun Kuti, ‘I’m bigger than your father, Fela’
Nigerians are currently divided following a social media clash between Grammy-winning singer Wizkid and Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti. The exchange intensified on Tuesday after Wizkid fired back at Seun following six days of persistent criticism from the latter directed at the singer and his fanbase, Wizkid FC.
The dispute escalated when Wizkid took to his Instagram Stories to address Seun directly with several blunt posts. He wrote, “Pu**y boy @thenigbirdkuti ok i big pass your papa!!! wetin u one do? Fool at 40! In another post, the singer added, “@bigbirdkuti I’m Big Wiz everyday bigger than your papa!! Wetin u wan do fool?”
Wizkid also shared his reaction on X, where he compared Seun’s online activities to the activism of his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. He wrote, “Fela fight for freedom this fool Dey fight fc! Oloshi Omo ale!” This remark followed a week of Seun Kuti warning fans against comparing modern Afrobeats stars to the legendary Fela.
During his earlier livestreams, Seun Kuti had expressed deep frustration over the comparisons, describing them as an insult to his father’s revolutionary history. Seun said, “Wizkid FC, keep Fela’s name out of your mouths. You try to claim that your fake artiste is the new Fela… It is actually an insult to compare Wizkid to Fela.”
The Afrobeat musician also accused the fanbase of lacking historical perspective and being fueled by ignorance rather than true defiance. “You people have no respect. If your lack of respect came from a place of defiance, I would respect it. But your lack of respect comes from a place of ignorance,” he stated during one session.
Further fueling the fire, Seun claimed that Wizkid had appropriated a nickname he had established years prior. “Wizkid stole my name. Tell your fave to be original… This name has been here since. I am the first to come up with it,” he said, referring to the “Big Bird” moniker used by both.
Public reactions have been swift, with some praising Wizkid for finally defending himself and others criticizing him for involving Fela’s memory in the spat. As the debate continues across X, Instagram, and Facebook, many fans are urging both artists to preserve the dignity of the Kuti legacy and focus on their music instead
