Chimamanda Adichie Loses One-Year-Old Son After Brief Illness

Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has lost one of her one-year-old twin sons following a brief illness.

In a statement released by her communications team, it was confirmed that Nkanu Nnamdi, one of Adichie’s twin boys with her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, passed away on Wednesday. The family described the loss as devastating and appealed for privacy as they mourn.

The statement, signed by Omawumi Ogbe of GLG Communications, requested grace and prayers from the public, adding that no further comments would be made during this period of grief.

Adichie and Esege married in 2009 and are parents to a daughter born in 2016. Their twin sons were born via surrogate in 2024.

Adichie is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most celebrated contemporary writers, known for acclaimed works such as Purple Hibiscus, Half of a Yellow Sun, Americanah, and Dream Count. She is also the author of influential nonfiction titles including We Should All Be Feminists and Notes on Grief
