Kogi Poly sacks lecturer over alleged sexual misconduct
Kogi State Polytechnic has announced the termination of an Administrative Officer II, Mukhtar Muhammed, following serious allegations of sexual misconduct involving a student. The institution also dismissed another staff member, Funmilayo Afolabi, an Assistant Chief Executive Officer, for a prolonged absence from duty. These decisive actions were finalized during the 72nd Regular Meeting of the Governing Council, presided over by the Chairman of the Council, Barrister Sani Shaibu, on Friday, December 19, 2025.
According to a statement released on Sunday by the Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Mrs. Uredo Omale, the council’s decision regarding Mr. Muhammed came “after considering the recommendations of the Appointments, Promotions and Disciplinary Committee over allegations of sexual misconduct.” In the case of Mrs. Afolabi, the dismissal was triggered by her allegedly abandoning her professional responsibilities for a period of nine months without any formal approval from the school authorities.
The disciplinary sweep extended beyond dismissals, as the council also approved the demotion of a Deputy Registrar, Mr. Audu Mathew, to the rank of Principal Assistant Registrar. This penalty was issued for negligence of duty, a move the institution describes as part of its effort to reaffirm its “zero tolerance for misconduct and dereliction of duty.” By addressing these internal lapses, the polytechnic aims to foster a more accountable and professional environment for both staff and students.
Despite the focus on discipline, the council also took time to recognize and reward professional growth within the institution. The governing body approved the elevation of 11 Principal Lecturers to the prestigious rank of Chief Lecturer. This was part of a broader promotion cycle that saw 49 academic staff and 71 non-teaching staff move up for the 2024 exercise, alongside a massive wave of 225 academic and 227 non-teaching staff recognized for the 2025 promotion cycle.
The statement concluded by emphasizing that these various administrative decisions were strategic “efforts to strengthen discipline, reward merit and improve service delivery within the polytechnic.” By balancing strict disciplinary measures with a robust system for career advancement, the institution hopes to set a high standard for academic and administrative excellence in the coming year
